PRAY for me, Diezani begs Nigerians

Nigerian petroleum resources minister Diezani Alison-Madueke listens to a question following a speech at the IHS CERAWeek energy conference Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in Houston. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)Immediate  past  Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is battling with cancer in London and  being investigated by UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) for alleged corruption, has asked Nigerians for a special favour. She wants Nigerians to pray for her as she undergoes cancer surgery next week.
 Diezani Alison-Madueke
Speaking through Oscar Onwudiwe, her family’s lawyer, according to online newspaper, The Cable, Diezani, who denied reports of her arrest, said she was undergoing cancer treatment in the UK and “hopes to come out strong to face all the allegations.”
In a statement, Onwudiwe said: “The Madueke family, like most other families, has its own challenges. For instance, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke has been receiving treatment for cancer in the UK which started while she was in office. She completed months of chemotherapy just last week and she is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in London.
The family has been bearing this challenge with prayers and as much grace and fortitude as possible; and would plead with all reasonable Nigerians to pray for her recovery so that she can face these allegations and give account of her stewardship.”
The call for prayers came after an earlier statement released on Thursday in which the family revealed the state of the former minister. Onwudiwe had made the following statement:
“The stories are false but it(sic) feeds  the mood of the moment; hence, the silence from Diezani all along. It is worth emphasising that Mrs Alison-Madueke was never arrested or detained and her passport was never seized.
She was merely invited, and she honoured it promptly. But there is a limit to how much any reasonable person can bear the tactics of these … We all know that what makes a lie fly is the little truth contained therein.
This happens to be the weapon used to defame highly-placed people.” Onwudiwe also accused the Nigerian media of reporting “laughable claims” of a purchase of an apartment in Hyde Park with an “amount which embarrassingly ranges from £12.5 million sterling to £13 billion sterling (N3.9tr).
“This claim is utterly false and laughable, for the amounts mentioned are only in the imagination of the reporters. This property is quite popular. It belongs to a well-known eminently successful Nigerian entrepreneur who would also find this allegation embarrassing as the intention to sell the property has neither been contemplated nor disclosed to any person.”

Nigeria destined to fail –Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says Nigeria has been destined to fail since its creation by the British in 1914.
He said the British created Nigeria such that the ‘poor North’ would continue to rule while the ‘rich South’ will remain oppressed.
Fani-Kayode said this in a Facebook post on Tuesday titled, “The 9th Earl of Bathrust and the Nigerian State.”
He said shortly before independence, the British gave the North permanent rule.
He said, “The Nigeria that they (British) handed over to us in 1960 was nothing but an unworkable artificial state and a poisoned chalice. It was destined to fail right from the outset.

“Worse still, they handed us that poisoned chalice with a malicious and mischievous intent and without any recourse to our people in terms of any form of a national referendum.”
Fani-Kayode, said what the British did in Nigeria was replicated in other countries like India and Sudan, adding that those countries had since divided having woken up politically.
He said it was regrettable that Nigerians had failed to take their destinies into their own hands.
He added, “The British did the same thing in varying degrees when they left virtually each and every one of their other third world colonies. The most obvious cases, however, were Nigeria, Sudan, India and the nation that was formerly known as Malaya.
“Every one of these four countries had monumental problems with sustaining their unity after independence and all of them, with the exception of Nigeria, were compelled to breakup into smaller entities before they could bring out the best in themselves as a people and fully exercise their human potential.
“Consequently, India broke up into three and became India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; the Sudan broke into two and became Southern Sudan and the Sudan and Malaya broke into two and became Malaysia and Singapore. Nigeria has yet to find the courage and fortitude to go that far and whether we will eventually break up or not remains to be seen.”
Fani-Kayode said if the terms of the ‘marriage’ between the North and the South were not reviewed, there could be further crisis.
He added, “The result of the amalgamation was predictable. It was either the ‘poor husband’ (the North) would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘rich wife’ (the South) or the ‘rich wife’ would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘poor husband’. And we are right in the middle of that struggle for mutual subjugation till today.”
The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain said the only way to address the “unfair” arrangement was a complete devolution of powers. He said Nigeria must embrace true federalism.

IMMANS WARN MUSLIMS NOT TO ACEPT SALLAH FESTIVE RAM FROM EKITI STATE GOVNOR

The  Imams and Alfas in Ekiti state has ordered Muslims in the state not to collect rams and other food items for Sallah celebration, if presented to them in any form by the state government.
They reached the decision at a meeting held on Tuesday at Ansar-u-Deen Society Central Mosque Odo-Otu, Ado Ekiti, where it reviewed the “deliberate marginalization of Muslim members in Ekiti State Government’s political appointment.”
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and National Council of Muslim Youth Organisation, Ekiti State, had respectively issued statements condemning Governor Ayodele Fayose for neglecting Muslims in appointments.
The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, had also described “Fayose’s treatment of Muslims in terms of appointment in the state” as “the worst since the state was created.”
The party claimed Ekiti Muslims were not given up to one per cent of the appointments made by Fayose’s administration.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the League said, “Based on the above, the League, Ekiti State Council, hereby resolved that no Muslim in the state should collect rams and other food items, if presented to them in any form by the government.”
The communiqué was signed by the state’s Assistant Secretary, League of Imams and Alfas, Alhaji Quadri Oguntuase; a Representative of Ansar-u-Deen Missioner, Fatai Jimoh and Chief Imam, Ilogbo, Imam Abdul Rasak.
It added, “Any Muslim that collects such rams or food items under any guise has taken Haram (Unlawful) and the punishment of the Almighty Allah awaits the person. (Quran 71 verse 28).”
“This order stands until the government accedes to our demands as earlier published.”
Fayose had distributed chickens and rice to indigenes during the last Christmas celebration in the state as part of his stomach infrastructure policy.

Soyinka suggests monument in memory of Chibok girls

IBADAN—Nobel Laureate, Emeritus Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday, said if Nigeria had a genuine leadership, it would not be in the mess it has found itself, adding that the country should raise a monument for the missing Chibok girls.
wole-soyinka-cryHe said this at the 66th foundation day anniversary and 2014 convocation ceremonies which held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
Though the erudite scholar scored the Federal Government low in its efforts at bringing back the girls who were abducted on April14, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, insisted that his administration was on top of the situation.
Prof. Soyinka, who was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree of letters along with others, said the activities of the insurgents had cast a shadow of intimidation on Nigerians.
Others who were awarded with the honorary doctorate degrees included Chief Wole Olanipekun(SAN), who got Doctor of Law (LL.D); Emeritus Theophilus Ogunlesi was honoured with Doctor of Science (D.Sc), and Emeritus Tekena Tamuno was awarded Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) and a business tycoon was honoured with Doctor of Science.
Soyinka, who spoke on behalf of other awardees said: “Yes, it is a festive occasion. But, we are here and we know we are sitting under a cloud, it’s a very heavy cloud. It is a cloud of embarrassment, of shame, a feeling of dereliction or solemn irresponsibility towards children.
We are sitting here under a cloud of impotence, of a calamity that was not without notice. You all know why we are all here. It is in the course of learning and till death we will not stop learning. It is all about learning and that is what life is all about. We never stop learning.”
Describing the abduction of the Chibok girls as “a hovering indictment on all of us as a nation”, he said, “this cloud is   made up of a sense of humiliation.
We sent our children out on an errand and they did not come back. The errand on which we sent them is what we are celebrating today. This is what creates this festive atmosphere. Though it is a festive mood, but our young protagonists went on that errand, we gathered them together in preparation for this day and they never came back. It is something we can never allow our souls to forget.
“Let us remain faithful to our temple of knowledge by safeguarding its moralities. It is the morality that engages us in the protection of the future.
“The temple of knowledge is dedicated to a very simple expression, the pursuit of truth. It doesn’t matter whether we are herbalists, Buddhists, Hindus or Christians. There is only one sanctuary that is open to all of us and it is the temple of learning.
“It is a festive occasion and I am not ready to cast a pall on it. I wish I could be among you celebrating over and over again.”

Fayemi, Bamidele’s supporters in fresh bloody clash

ADO EKITI — Supporters of a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and those loyal to the governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, yesterday, engaged each other in a bloody clash at Iyin Ekiti, in Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government area of the state.
The two groups had, last week Friday, engaged each other in a bloody clash during the burial of the mother of an All Progressives Alliance, APC, stalwart, Mr. Oladipo Akinwumi, a development that led to some of them sustaining various degrees of injuries and had Bamidele’s operations office,  located in Ado and the APC office at Iyin Ekiti, vandalized.
However, the Director-General, Campaign Organization of Opeyemi Bamidele, Mr. Ropo Ige and Mr. Deji Adesokan, a Special Assistant to the Governor on Security and the Chairman of Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Area, Major Tajudeen Awe, are playing a blame game over the crisis that broke out in the community.
Opeyemi’s supporters had accused those of Fayemi of inviting the state co-ordinator of Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, Prince Adeniyi Adedipe, to cause mayhem in the community, but Adesokan and Awe denied inviting the OPC leader.
Vanguard gathered that trouble started, yesterday, when Opeyemi’s supporters were protesting the arrest of two of their members by the police who came to effect the arrest of people responsible for last week’s upheaval in the town.
They were said to have engaged the police in a scuffle, a development that left three people injured.
Opeyemi, in a reaction, has called on the police and the state governor, Dr. Fayemi, to probe the incident.
In a statement by his special Assistant on Media, Mr. Ahmed Salami, Bamidele accused some of the governor’s aides of engineering the crisis.
The police image maker in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said his men had arrested no fewer than seven people in connection with the clash in the town.
Blame Fayemi, police —Adeyeye
Meantime, Afenifere chieftain and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has said that Governor Kayode Fayemi and the police should be blamed for the spate of political violence being witnessed in the state.
Adeyeye, who called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to save Ekiti people.

11 Herdsmen kill in Oyo

IBADAN — NO fewer than eleven herdsmen have been killed in the last six weeks in some parts of Oke Ogun area of Oyo State.

The towns where the killings allegedly took place, according to the Fulani ethnic community in the state, are Otu, Ikomu, Igbo-Ora, Iwere-Ile, Iganna, Ilaju and Ado-Awaye.

In a petition by the leaders  of Jamu Nati Fulbe Association of Nigeria, Oyo State Chapter, Alhaji Salihu Kadiri and Mallam Muhammed Salihu Kisi, National Chairman and General Secretary ,respectively, the herdsmen called on Governor Abiola Ajimobi to do something urgently to prevent further loss of lives in the areas.

They gave the names of some of those allegedly killed as Sanni Musa, Saidu Abdulahi, Ibraheem Haruna, Umar Babuga, Saliu Rebo and Muhammad Usman.

They said: “Natives, particularly farmers and youths, kill our people at any slight provocation. The common excuses for such brutal killings are that our cattle are fond of destroying their farmlands or  disturbing free flow of vehicular traffic on some major roads.

“In the last few weeks, these persons have invaded many Fulani clans and settlements to commit their crime of serial murder with impunity. This has resulted in the cold-blood murder of at least eleven of our brothers whose families have been left in eternal grief.”
